A Vow so Bold and Deadly

A Vow so Bold and Deadly is a young adult fantasy romance, and the final volume of the Cursebreakers trilogy by Brigid Kemmerer. Rhen and Harper find themselves at an impasse; Rhen’s treatment of Grey and Tycho has strained their relationship, maybe beyond repair. Grey and Lia Mara find themselves fighting just to gain the respect of the people of Syhl Shallow. Attacks on the throne – against Lia Mara herself – have them on high alert. And all the while a war looms, unless someone is brave enough to call for peace. Beyond all of this, Lilith has returned; her torment of Rhen quickly extends to the rest of the castle, and old alliances may be the only thing that could possibly defeat her.

There are several instances of mild language in this book, and no blasphemy. There are two intense kissing scenes, described in minute detail; it is heavily implied that both of these scenes end in the characters having sex, but both scenes “fade to black” before showing anything more explicit; one of the female characters becomes pregnant as a result. There are frequent depictions of violence in this book, and near the end it becomes quite graphic in description; characters frequently train to fight with swords and knives; characters are stabbed, cut, hit, shot with arrows, and are otherwise injured frequently; a kind of molotov cocktail is used near the beginning of the book, and a character is badly burned; torture is depicted – the primary antagonist uses magic to cause extreme pain and injury to the characters, including cuts and broken bones; past torture endured by the characters is also frequently mentioned; characters suffer from broken leg, rib, arm, and finger bones at the hands of the antagonist; the antagonist rips a man’s throat out with her bare hands – this is described multiple times in some detail. The use of magic is a main theme in this book; magic in this universe is inherent to a person – no spells or words are spoken to use it. Magic has mainly been a source of evil for the characters, but in this book it is portrayed more positively, and a main character uses magic to heal others. For these reasons, I would recommend this book for readers at least 16 years of age, and those who do not struggle with sexual sin.
