Fourth Wing is an adult fantasy romance, and is the first in a five-book series. Violet Sorrengail always thought she’d become a Scribe like her father. She studied there for years, and the archives feel like home. But when your mother is the general of the army, you have no choice but to do as she commands – so Violet joins the cadets hoping to become dragon riders. Betrayed at every turn by her own body, she will have to rely on her mind and the support of her friends to stay alive. Even that might not be enough to stop the son of her greatest enemy from killing her – Xaden Riorsan is sure to want revenge, and she’s an easy target. As the year progresses and new challenges arise at every turn, Violet discovers a truth that changes everything she’s ever known about her world and her own family.
There is near constant foul language; characters blaspheme against in-world gods, and use exclamations such as “Oh gods,” etc. There is one instance of true blasphemy, but it is likely a typo. There is frequent violence and threats of violence – characters participate in hand-to-hand fighting, and are regularly stabbed and slashed with knives, are hit and kicked, and have bones broken. Violet has a condition that causes her joints to easily dislocate, and this happens and is discussed with some frequency. There are a few instances of extended graphic sexual content; there are also several sexual references, and mentions of lust and attraction; all the characters in the book have a very casual view of sex, and it is discussed frequently. For all of these reasons, I would recommend that readers of all ages avoid this book.
